Fatlips Castle- ready to explore!

Outside Fatlips Castle

About 8 miles from Glenacre sits Fatlips Castle, one of the most iconic and much loved structures in the Borders. It has now been restored thanks to funding from Historic Scotland, Scottish Borders Council’s Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and the Minto family. The Castle, which sits atop Minto Craggs (on a Special  Site of Scientific Interest) had fallen into disrepair in recent years, with much of the roof, parapet walls and interiors having been destroyed, largely due to vandalism. There are many stories as the the origins of the name- click here to see what Wikipedia says!

The key can be obtained from Oliver's Garage (Tel: 01450 870221, http://www.tb-oliver.co.uk/ )  in nearby Denholm for £10 (£5 of which is refunded when key is returned). It's a bit of a climb up to the Castle, but well worth it for the fantastic views. See our photos below, taken on a lovely sunny (but windy!) weekend in April 2013.
